Don and Peggy Shriver, the Advisory Council Members of ICfC, launched our first “Parlor Conversation” on July 27 at their summer home in Upstate New York. Over delicious food and drinks, neighbors of the Shrivers’ home in Chadham brought lively conversation about the need for bringing peace and conciliation in the world. While learning about ICfC’s work in Israel and Cambodia and our Fellow Jina Moore’s experiences in Rwanda and Burundi, the group also shared its own experiences in Australia, USA or in the Philippines. The lively exchange made it very clear that such dialogues, whether done at home in the USA or overseas in the fractured communities, bring people together and create understanding and empathy for issues that can be divisive.
Marie Cavasora, who attended the conversation at the Shriver home, hosted her own Parlor Conversation in San Francisco on October 22nd, inviting her many friends that she had left behind when she moved to up-state New York.
Friends who attended come from many countries - Chile, Austria, Bulgaria, Armenia, India, Pakistan and the U.S. This salon made believers out of skeptics, and gave a sense of empowerment to those who initially felt that world peace is untenable. From this salon, not only were we successful in raising awareness of ICfC, but we are also primed to spread the awareness springing from this group, with participants hosting their own salons in the future. |
